Nelson Branch News

Winter has been quiet for us here in the Nelson Marlborough region. Three of our members have had some time away wintering overseas, visiting family and friends, or just having a holiday in the Tropics and enjoying the warmer temperatures as an alternative to the cold rain and frosts experienced here. (Those of us left at home are totally envious.)
On Friday the 30th of October, the Hygienists joined with the female Dentists, Periodontist and Dental Therapists of our region for the inaugural
‘Nelson Female Dental Professionals Dinner Meeting’ held at the ‘Café on Oxford’ café in Richmond.
This get together was organized by Donna Kennedy, a dentist from Auckland now working in Nelson. She had attended meetings like this up North and saw it as an excellent chance to catch up and liaise with colleagues who we wouldn’t normally see on a day to day basis.
An hour of CPD was presented, the speaker being John Scott, from our region. He is an Inspirational Yoga Teacher with 25 years experience teaching yoga, whose international clients boast Sting and Madonna.
His topics included;
-Developing a positive mindset, 80% focus and 20% technique for both operator and patient.
- Operators learning how to relax the patient using the calming effects of the techniques above to improve patient relaxation when they attend the Dental Practice, without having to teach the patient actual relaxation techniques.
-The Operator learning and practicing specific breathing techniques and also being shown the techniques to clear the mind of the rapid and busy thoughts that bombard us all the time and may interfere with the Operator presenting a calm environment for both themselves and the patient in such a challenging situation.
-Four simple steps to control stress for the dentist, hygienist or dental therapist, in the work environment. The nature of variable acceptance and diversity of patients to gaining acceptance of the dentistry required by that individual is a challenge to all who work in the industry.
The meal was very good, the company enjoyable especially meeting new dental colleagues and spot prizes fun.
Thank you Donna for organizing such a successful evening and we were all in agreement that it should be repeated. We will look forward to the next one.
Early next year our CPD calendar is starting to take shape.
We will be having Robyn Watson here in Nelson February /March next year for a day seminar on Instrumentation with her Typodonts, date to be confirmed and Deb Pratt, Hygienist is talking on Whitening.
Dates for both have yet to be confirmed.
We welcome any NZDHA members who are visiting our region at the time of our meetings to attend.

Hello from our Nelson Branch. We have had an interesting line up of speakers so far,
Cherrie Wainui - Dental Hygienist, presented her discussion on Non Violent Communication. It was outstanding, thought provoking and informative. GUNZ sponsored this evening. We had the opportunity to see their latest products.
Gerry Quinn - Dentist, specialising in TMJ complications, presented a power point full of photos and information. Gerry has over several years and still is mentored by an American specialist in this field. His work with TMJ takes patience and compliance from patients, as it is a slow procedure. Gerry is working with functional orthodontics an alternative to conventional orthodontics, as we know it. Gerry’s enthusiasm, passion and belief in the holistic treatment plan for his patients certainly left us thinking.....! Our meeting continued with Lyn and Roberta updating us from the conference. We welcomed Chris, Gerry’s orthodontic auxiliary as part of our group.
A commitment to improve numbers of the Nelson NZDHA branch has been extended to all the orthodontic auxiliaries in Nelson. Unfortunately we have lost Leanne Morris who has moved over to Australia to work, we wish her well for her future.
Richard Noar -Dentist, spoke to us on Full Mouth Disinfection. This is a technique his practice in Manchester used successfully for first time perio patients. This was an interesting and informative evening with open discussion throughout.
As the year draws closer to Christmas we have Todd Gracia (7th October) to discuss endodontics and perio followed by the NZDA day in November. Our Christmas function is to be held down in the Marlborough Sounds for a get together and waling the tracks and wine tour.
A good and busy year.

Our Branch covers a wide geographical area from Wanganui to the Hawkes Bay. We have 17 members in our branch. Some of our members find it difficult to attend meetings due to the distance and army commitments, but we have a small very committed group of attendees at meetings . We meet monthly (2nd Monday of month) and have the use of a great conference room facility at “The Palms” for our meetings. We have appreciated sponsorship for some of our meetings from GSK, Healthcare Essentials and Colgate.
We welcomed Mel Kernot from Dunedin and Aaron Wilson ex-Army to our Branch and Amy Jeffers back again. Kirsten Kirk has been on maternity leave looking after little Charlotte but still active within branch.
We started the year with a Planning meeting with Drinks and nibbles, followed the next month by a Peer Support Meeting with Article reviews/favourite instruments/ special cases of interest
Our monthly meetings have had some excellent CPD speakers, including : Dr Helen Lloyd ' on “Operation Phoenix' - Disaster Victim Identification and Forensic Odontology, Victoria Bushfires”: Dr Mike Courtney Orothodontist on”An evidenced based approach to clinical decision making”: Dr Glen Kirk on “Mechanisms of Pain and Pain Management”: Dr Ian Carpenter –“Bangledesh Dentistry”: Dr. Dikesh Parmar”Endodontist. “Perio Endo" and a planned meeting with Dr. Neil Tobin- Orthodontist-3D imaging.
Also we have been fortunate to be invited to the Central Districts NZDA Meetings and some of us attended meetings with Presentations on “Dentistry in the Community: Dr.Billy Cross, Dr. Ian Carpenter, Fiona Spencer. “Hospital Dentistry” Dr Andrew Sutherland, Dr Susie Ramirez, Dr Glen Kirk, Dr Phil Marshall and Dr Bill Gaudie -Periodontist“Perio for the GDP”.
Many of us attended the Conference in Auckland and also the Wellington NZDA conference in August which provided a full day course for Dental Hygienists .
We have had an interesting and active year.

Well we are gearing up now for the 2008 NZDHA Conference, aptly named “Scaling in the Wind”. With that in mind, a reminder goes out to all to pack warmly and have a scarf (or two) on hand as wind truly means wind in Palmerston North! Most of our activities at present are centred around Conference, and all regular branch attendees are contributing fully, making it a real team effort – thanks everyone!
Later in the year we have a final year student, Mai Grosch from Denmark visiting Palmerston North for her work placement. This is exactly what our final year student from Otago do. She has family here and did her 6th and 7th form schooling in New Zealand. She is excited to be coming, and we are happy to have her visit. Closer to the time we intend on arranging a dinner for her while she is here, with the branch, and she will discuss with us the similarities and differences she has noticed between the countries.
Congratulations go to Aaron Wilson on re-registering with DCNZ as a Dental Hygienist. He has had a four-year sabbatical from hygiene to pursue other interests, but is now back in the fold and we welcome him with open arms as Hygienists are still in demand throughout the country, and in Palmerston North no less.
Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month, at Flavour Café in the Downtown Mall from 6pm, unless specified otherwise. If anyone is visiting, they are free to drop in!

Waikato Branch News
We held our first meeting on the 6th March and had a great turn out of members. And I can report that at the end of this meeting we have a full branch committee appointed!! Thanks to the following...
Mary Mickleson, Steph McDonald, Kerryn Rutherford and Jayme Donkin. We welcomed in some new graduates in Cherie Baker, Jayme Donkin (who you see put her hand up for the committee) and Aenoy Phommala, all are dual trained and working in our local area.
Our first meeting was to plan the year ahead. Get as many members involved in presenting some material for our peer contact meetings; and to discuss the proposition of having a mini conference to cover one block of CPD presentations rather than having four separate meetings throughout the year.
This was greeted was a positive response as some of our branch travel a large distance to attend. It was agreed to have our mini conference in August this year, date yet to be decided.
We will report on the progress of this and what speakers we will have as the year goes on ... watch this space!! One of the other things that was discussed in detail was branch members presenting items to the branch. This will primarily be for peer contact but depending on the presentation could also be open to some CPD, what a bonus!
The first of these meetings will be held on the 8th May 2009. I'm quite excited to have our members becoming more pro-active in their own education... yeah go the Hygienists of NZ!! To clarify any confusion please read your Recertification for oral health practitioners - April 09 (last point page 8)
Some of the ideas thus far.. dental liability, what's covered and how it effects us. Dual Training, how it fits in? What is expected of them. Case studies etc. I will report on these as the year goes on. We look forward to an exciting and productive year.
If anyone is visiting the Waikato please be careful of the water you drink!!!! But congrats to all our new mum's to be.... Steph, Kerryn and Pam
UPCOMING MEETING DATE:
Friday 8th May 2009 - peer contact, held at Dental Excellence, Hamilton

Bay of Plenty Branch News

Wheels are in motion for a very eventful year ahead. We here at the BOP NZDHA branch are looking forward to another insightful year.
The following ideas are in the pipeline:
An information evening with a local physiotherapist to discuss importance of posture, preventing repetitive stress injuries and how to improve work posture. Another meeting will be a practical hands-on presentation trialling a new dental hygiene machine/instrument and also a presentation on TMJ dysfunctions and treatments... and these are just a few ideas we here at the Bay of Plenty branch are hoping to achieve this year.
The BOP NZDHA branch was kindly invited by the local dental therapists recently and our DHB to attend a very informative day on infection control presented by Megan Sharpe. I would personally recommend this presentation to fellow hygienists and all dental personnel as it’s up to date and a great refresher.
It has been very pleasing to undertake this new role as chairperson and I thank everyone in the BOP branch for the nominations and this great experience.
I am also pleased to see our numbers growing, it is always nice to have new faces and ideas at each meeting and look forward to seeing more of our new members.
Our congratulations go out to Lianne Bateman and Pete Melville have recently announced their engagement and are looking to get married 2009 and Candice Gracie who has recently married Tony Taylor on the 11th January 2008.

North Shore Branch Report
What a fabulous branch we are on the North Shore! I must say when I accepted the responsibility and challenges of chairperson at the re-launch meeting in August I did wonder what I had got myself into. However over the past few months I have worked with a fantastic bunch of women (my fellow committee) to organize three branch meetings for the remaining year.
As a committee we spent a couple of Saturday’s brainstorming, drinking cups of tea (not sure why it was not wine), to come up with three fabulous speakers for 2008. Thanks Lou for the use of your home and your hospitality.
In August we had our first presentation and business meeting as a re-launched branch. The evening was sponsored by Sirona at their fantastic showroom, and we had a presentation from one of New Zealand’s most experienced hygienists Mary Mowbray. Mary delivered a very educational presentation on the Sirona Perioscan, sharing her vast experience and knowledge with this equipment that she has in her private practice.
Thank you Mary and Dustin and the Sirona team for a great evening, the pizzas and drinks were fabulous!
Our first business meeting followed Mary’s presentation and was well attended with 23 members participating. We were finally able to find the North Shore committee a chair-elect and I’d like to take the opportunity to extend a warm welcome to, final year hygiene student, Karen Boyd. Thank you to all the members who attended our August meeting.
Our second meeting will be held on Wednesday, 8 October and is sponsored by Henry Schien Shalfoon with materials supplied by GC. Our speaker for the evening will be Dr Hisham Abdalla. Dr Abdalla is the first laser dentist in Auckland and will be enlightening us on the topic “Risk Profiling” the new paradigm for health management in dental practice.
Our third and last meeting for 2008 will be our Christmas meeting on Wednesday, 3rd December. The evening will be held at AUT Akoranga campus and sponsored by GSK. Thank you Alison for your enthusiasm to sponsor a North Shore meeting. Our speaker for the evening will be Sue Cartwright.
For a new branch we have been very busy. We have a fantastic bunch of hygienist’s north of the bridge and personally I look forward to getting to know all the members better and as a committee continuing to organise informative speakers. Thank you to you all for venturing out on a Wednesday night, I hope we have made it an enjoyable evening for you.
A big thank you to Caron, Louise and Catherine for your support, you have all made my transition to the role of chairperson so easy and enjoyable.

Welcome to all for 2009. Firstly I would like to thank Denise Hunter and her committee for all their hard work in providing a very informative programme for 2008.
As a Branch, we received an invitation from Wellington NZDA to attend a presentation by Gerry Thyne on the revised protocols for Antibiotic Cover for Infective Endocarditis. There was a good turnout from our Branch and It was a very informative evening and some grey areas were cleared up.
Our first Branch meeting went well. There was a fantastic feedback session of presentation ideas that members would like to see for this year and beyond.
Looking forward, further meetings are planned with some exciting speakers and topics.
We are looking forward to the NZDHA Conference in Auckland and the Trade Expo. See you there!
Congratulations go to Charlotte who was married in October 2008 and Theresa February 2009.

Taranaki Branch News

In July, four of our members travelled to Palmerston North for the NZDHA “Scaling in the Wind” Conference. Thanks to the Manawatu Branch for being such great hosts.
We have had two Branch meetings since our last report. The first was held on Friday 13 June at Gusto Restaurant, the second on Saturday 20 September at the Batch Restaurant (We do enjoy supporting our Cafés!). At our last Branch meeting, our members decided to have one Saturday a year where the Branch will organise verifiable CPD. The reasoning behind this move is the branch has found after work meetings are difficult for people who have family commitments or have had to travel to New Plymouth. As the branch is very small we want to be able to have full participation of all members.
This year, some of our members have had the travel bug, (or was it a need for sunshine?) and some Hygienists travelled overseas, hence there have been no CPD meetings during the winter months.
On Tuesday 21 October, Dave Antunovic is giving us a lecture on “inflamed tissue”. Temera of NSK is sponsoring this meeting. Prior to Dave’s lecture, Temera is doing a presentation on the NSK portfolio.
The next verifiable CPD meeting is to be held on Tuesday 4 November. At the time of writing this report, we are waiting for confirmation on the speaker. Lisa from Colgate is sponsoring this meeting.
Our final Branch meeting for the year will be our Christmas “get together” on Friday 28 November.
This will be held at the Arborio Restaurant and during the evening we shall organise the Management team for 2009. We are looking forward to having our “exec Buddy”, Kathleen who is taking the opportunity to visit our Branch to introduce herself to us.
As this may be the last report for 2008, the Taranaki Branch would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday.
UPCOMING MEETING DATES:
Date: Tuesday 21 October 2008 at 6.00pm
Venue: 10 Carlton Tce.
Topic: Lecture on “inflamed tissue” by Dave Antunovic.
Date: Tuesday 4 November 2008 at 6.00pm
Venue: Lumino Dental Practice, 54 Lemon St
Topic: to be notified.
Date: Friday 28 December 2008 at 6.30pm
Venue: Arborio Restaurant.
Topic: Christmas Cheer

Otago Branch News
Hello everyone,
This year the Otago branch has been very busy! We have tried to meet up at least once a month with guest speakers or having audio CD evenings. The CD's were from the NZDA Education Trust - Best Practice which Nicky Perkins sourced from the NZDA magazine that her practice received. Each CD ran for about an hour ranging from 5-10 different topics per CD. Topics ranged from aging dentition, periodontal management to dental materials. Our CD evenings took place in April, May and June.
Jiljane Delaney came and presented to us in July at the Kingsgate Hotel. She also presented to the first and second year Bachelor of Oral Health Students the same evening.
In August we had some of the local Periodontists - John Boyens, Douglas Holborow and Jonathan Leichter present to us as part of a panel. The evening consisted of branch members having questions ready to discuss eg. referral processes and discussing what is stable and healthy periodontium. A big thank you to Colgate for sponsoring this evening.
Karyn Becconsall-Ryan presented to us in September on xerostomia. She discussed what xerostomia is, the direct and indirect effects and diagnosing and treating xerostomia.
Thank you to all branch members who have contributed this year in helping me organise everything, especially Gina Todd who I know has put in extra work towards our branch.
Upcoming Meetings:
Jonathan Broadbent
Topic - Dental Plaque
Venue - Lumino The Dentists, 10 Pitt Street, Dunedin
Time - 6.00pm
Date - Monday 20th October

Over the past few months, the Northland branch has been fortunate to have the following guest speakers present seminars for its members.
Robyn Watson held a seminar on the 7th June for our branch and the dental therapists in the Northland region. The key topics discussed at this seminar were instrument management and infection control within the workplace. This seminar was sponsored by Henry Schein Shalfoon.
Dr Grant Croft was the Northland branch’s second guest speaker for the year, which took place on the 7th July. His presentation was based on his specialty of dental implants and their maintenance. Dr Croft presented case studies of patient’s with implants, including both the successful and the unsuccessful cases. Haley Phillips and Kim Austin of Nobel Biocare, allowed us to have hands on experience with tightening and loosening the torque of implants which for the members of the Northland branch, was very educational and beneficial.
Eloise Botha visited the Northland Branch meeting on 7th July. The agenda of this meeting was for Eloise to help in restructuring the branch and to allocate the roles and positions which need to be filled in order to have a functional branch.
Upcoming Meetings:
Tuesday 4th November Guest Speaker (unknown at this stage)

We are starting the year with a meeting to come up with some ideas about what our members would like to see for the year. Our new Team includes Myself as Chairperson, Cyrenne Seaton as chairperson elect, Natasha Glausiuss as secretary, Clare Heeran as treasurer and Christine Williams as CPD coordinator.
We have lots of ideas for our meetings this year. One with a local periodontist Richard Henderson for a perio presentation and to meet a new member of his team Rajiv Verma.
We kicked the year off with a one day hands on course presented by Robin Watson about hand and ultrasonic instrumentation. Some of the members attended and enjoyed the day.
Other meetings planned involve some of our local dentists and oral medicine specialists. We are meeting monthly on the first Thursday each month – see the website for updated details. We welcome any visiting members of the NZDHA.
In our first branch meeting on the year Shona Ferguson decided it would be great to have someone to contact regarding job opportunities within the Canterbury area. Branch members can now email Shona about jobs that they know about and Shona will forward an email out monthly to let all branch members know the details of the jobs.
We had some new people join our branch this year, Sheree Hann, Winston Chang and Bridget Ranger. We are multiplying in other areas too as more of our members have their children. Congrats to all those who are having babies this year.
UPCOMING MEETING DATES:
Thursday 2 April; Thursday 7 May and Wednesdays 3 June are the next three firm dates for our branch CPD meetings.

It’s been a busy 3rd quarter of the year.
The annual DH conference and Dental Expo at Greenlane , Auckland got a great response from the hygienists from around the country. It was the time to hear a good line-up of speakers, get to mingle with the familiar and friendly faces of the dental supply companies and the opportunity for a catch-up with colleagues and friends......To cut to the chase....to top up our CPD points!!
We had a hastily organised visit of author and speaker, Trisha O’ Hehrir. She had been speaking at a conference in Australia and graciously availed herself ,for one day ,to speak to us hygienists, in NZ. This day course was readily sponsored by Healthcare Essentials and Paradise Dental Technologies. This allowed a good number of us to attend at no cost and 4 CPD points. It was held at the Akoranga Campus AUT ............
We had Daniel Fitzgibbon, a periodontist, speak to us in September about the regeneration of periodontal tissues ....was very informative .It left us able to understand the physiology behind regenerative procedures and identify cases where tissues can be regenerated .Our sponsor for the evening was GSK . Our thanks to GSK and Alison Field, the dental team leader ,for their on-going support of the hygienists(great goody bags!)The meeting was at the Laser Lifecare Institute.
An invitation to attend the a meeting organised by the North Shore branch was extended to us in July. This was an opportunity to hear Hisham Abdalla talk about lasers in dentistry .
We want to wish our Past President Eloise Botha lots of joy and love as she embarks on a new journey, marriage. Also, personally, my sincere thanks to Eloise for being “my buddy” when I stepped into the role of Chairperson this year.
EVENTS:
Lesley Turner-Hall, our tri-athlete, has excelled yet again. She ran in the Huntley Half Marathon(9th overall-1:21:58) and won her age group. She also ran in the July Gold Coast Half Marathon in July(3rd-W35-39 -2:57:58) ,Lydiards Legends Marathon(3rd-3:08:02)Keep this woman DOWN!!! Then she went “home” to Canada to do another race.We all wonder when she finds the time to practice her scaling!!!WELL DONE Lesley!!
Cynthia Wallbridge, the Past Auckland Chairperson, visited one of the smaller and poorer islands in Fiji, during the mid-year school holidays. She did this philanthropic trip with her husband David, a dentist and 2 daughters on the Mercy ship .Free medical and dental treatment and any other form of aid i.e. plumbing, building was carried out or whatever they could do to help the locals .
Erena Young, entered a body-building competition ,as a Novice and WON it!!
Leslea Stapleton is now Mrs Eilenberg -Congrats!
At all our branch meetings there have been give-a-ways in the form of lucky draws. At our meetings, we’ve had a massage voucher and a foot spa and wine handed over to the deserving attendee. Here’s hoping that we can carry on with this as it is a great incentive (not a bribe)for our members.
Our committee will continue, in our positions, for another year .We are confident that we will have a keen member willing to fill the only vacant position of Chair-elect for 2010.
Up-coming events:
29Oct 09 Rebecca Schipper - Colgate –Dentine sensitivity-Picton Community Centre
18Nov 09 Nina Vasan ,Paediatric Dentist - Henry Schein-Regional-Rick Longbottom
